Frequently Asked Questions
Is Vermont Flight Academy operating now?
Yes, VFA is currently flying almost every day.
How much does it cost to learn fly?
The cost of flight training is highly variable and dependent on a number of factors. As VFA is an FAR 141 Flight School, the minimum flight training time for a Private Pilot license is reduced to 35 hours. We currently offer dual flight training in Cessna 172s for $180-190/hour (that is the total cost including instructor and fuel fees).
What is the difference between FAR 141 and 61 training?
VFA currently provides flight training under both sets of FAA regulations. The advantages of FAR 141 training include:
- a detailed course syllabus providing key benchmarks for both students and instructors,
- a highly efficient path to attaining flight proficiency in a short time span,
- reduced flight training hour requirements towards both Private and Commercial Pilot Certificates,
- comprehensive and attentive ground training in preparation for written and oral exams,
- as well as high regard in professional aviation education.
Combined with our staff of highly experienced pilots, our 141 training is an excellent way to start your aviation career. We are also happy to instruct on an FAR 61 basis as dictated by the needs of our students. Regardless of the training curriculum, we will train to the same high standards with your benefit in mind.
What makes Vermont Flight Academy different?

Does Vermont Flight Academy offer introductory flights?
Yes. VFA currently offers introductory flights which we call Discovery Flights. Our basic Discovery Flight option is $99 and includes about an half hour of instructor briefing time as well 1/2 hour of flight time in a Cessna 172 (cost will vary depending on exact length of flight) . This flight time may be logged in a logbook as the first legal flight in your flight training (and overall aviation life). We also offer longer flights as requested. Our instructors are available every day of the week for Discovery Flights - call any time to check schedule options.
Does Vermont Flight Academy accept international students?
Yes. VFA accepts students who fulfill the visa and TSA requirements for flight training students in the United States.
